Athens Trial Lawyer. Over 20 years in the courtroom.
John Baker has spent more than two decades representing individuals and families against insurance companies, corporate defendants, and government entities in courtrooms across Athens, Oconee County, and northeast Georgia. He focuses on serious personal injury — auto accidents, medical malpractice, and wrongful death — and probate and fiduciary litigation, including will contests, trust disputes, and fiduciary breach claims.
He has obtained dozens of verdicts and settlements over 23 years, including six- and seven-figure results in state and federal courts. He tries cases. He does not settle for less than what his clients deserve.
John holds the Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent® rating — the highest possible peer review rating — for ten consecutive years, including the Judicial Edition, which reflects assessments specifically from judges. He deliberately maintains a limited caseload so every client receives direct, hands-on representation from a trial lawyer who knows their case inside and out.
He earned his J.D. from Mercer University's Walter F. George School of Law in 2002 and his undergraduate degree from Georgia College & State University in 1999. He has practiced in Clarke and Oconee Counties for his entire career. He has served as President of the Athens Bar Association and was a member of the inaugural class of the State Bar of Georgia's Leadership Academy. He is also the founding Chairman of Filmathens, a nonprofit promoting film culture in Athens.

John does not practice estate planning or transactional law. He is a courtroom lawyer who handles disputes — will contests, fiduciary breach claims, catastrophic injury cases — cases that require someone who actually tries cases to verdict.
The highest Martindale-Hubbell peer review rating, achieved for ten consecutive years including the Judicial Edition. That rating reflects assessments from opposing counsel and from the judges before whom he appears.
Two decades of practice in Clarke and Oconee Counties means deep familiarity with the courts, the judges, and the opposing counsel. A limited caseload means every client speaks directly with John — not a paralegal or associate.
